Take Time to Relax
On the Costa Vida blog, we share tips to living a healthy, balanced life. We talk about eating whole, real foods and the importance of physical activity. But today we’re highlighting a different component of a healthy lifestyle we don’t write about as frequently – managing stress.
No matter what stage of life you’re in, you will experience stress. Too much stress can have a negative impact on your health, so it’s important to find ways to manage it. Our favorite way to relax is spending a day at the beach. (Have you entered to win the Cruise to the Coast giveaway?) We wish we could take a beach day every time we needed to relax. Wouldn’t that be great?! Today is National Relaxation Day, so we’re sharing tips to help you reduce stress anytime, anywhere.
Close your eyes, sit up straight or lie on your back, and focus on deep breathing for a few minutes. Deep breathing exercises have been linked to decreased anxiety, a clearer mind, and lower blood pressure.
Spend a few minutes stretching or take a short walk around the house or office. Movement causes your brain to release the happy chemical endorphins which reduce anxiety and stress.
Another endorphin producing activity is laughter. Call a friend, turn on your favorite TV show, or watch a funny YouTube video until you’re laughing out loud!
When you experience stress, it can be difficult to focus on anything other than the negative stressor. Try shifting your focus to the positive things in your life. The negative stress will seem much smaller and more manageable in comparison.
Create a playlist of your favorite songs that instantly make you feel happy and relaxed. If you can, take the tunes for a walk or practice deep breathing exercises to help you relax even more.
